An Evening With Sir George ....
A few weeks ago I was sat outisde in the garden when Oz leaned over the fence dangling a full page ad in the Global & Mail ... 'Sir George Martin - An Evening With Famed Beatles Producer' .... "Oh yes, we have to go to that!".
Oz and I love The Beatles, and fully grasp the gravity of George Martins involvement in the epicness of The Beatles. Myself, I've always found Sir George engaging and really wouldn't miss the chance to see him in person.
So this week, we headed out to the Chan Theatre on the UBC campus, joined the masses ... and ... waiting with excitement to see him. On he came, to a standing ovation - well he deserves it -and rolled right into about 2 hours of stories, film shorts and sound-clips from over his career. He's such a great dude.
He recounted the time he signed The Beatles. Brian Epstein had come around and pitched their act. George wasn't impressed. Brian sulked. George felt bad and said "Bring the band down, and I'll check them out", not knowing every label had turned them down. The rest is history ...
Imagine if they hadn't hadn't been signed by George Martin -- how would things have turned out? It's hard to imagine .. not only is he a visionary producer, but and incrediable mixer. Dip back into some of their songs and listen ... it's hard to imagine the beautiful "I'll Be Back", of Hard Day's Night ... sounding 1/1000 as good without him. It's not a complex song, but the mixing and balance of the sounds create such depth. I was saw a clip of him in the studio with Brian Wilson. Brian digged out the masters of a Beach Boys song and George mixed it up . Brian was blown away .. "I've never heard that song as good"
Anyways, we had a great night with Sir George.
